You have made every intimate part of your life your own — the car that waits at your door, the table held under your name, the room no one enters unless you have asked for them. Then you take the most private thing you possess and carry it out of the house, to a chair in a corridor and a stranger across a desk. The attention comes to you. Your own study, the seat you already think in, the hour kept beneath your roof; the same on a weeknight, on a deck when the season moves south, wherever the life is lived. The discipline that orders the household turns, now, upon the one who lives inside it, and the only presence beside your own is the one you invited. Consider the decision that will not let you sleep: the sale, the succession, the name you mean to protect. He comes to you, and the night you would have spent circling it alone becomes a night it is worked through. Some things a person can tell no one: not the people who work for them, not the family who would carry it differently, not any office that keeps a record. What is said is heard, and held, and never spoken of again, as everything has been kept inside these houses for fifteen years. You are met where you are already yourself.

There are times when you need a strong companion beside you — an emotional presence, close at hand, out of your home and beyond your comfort zone. Times when you need support to handle your fears, to fight down your social anxieties, to face your traumas and overcome them. He goes with you. Where the evening is hardest is precisely where he is: at the table, or a chair away, so the hour is met with a mind beside you and its weight halved before a word is spoken. Picture the brother you have not truly spoken to in years, seated across the courses; the launch you must be seen at, radiant, while something in you tightens; the island in the Andaman Sea where a marriage came apart, and which you have not returned to since. He travels with you there, for the evening or the week, and the place long avoided is walked again, and faced, and at last set down. A fear spoken of from the safety of a chair is only rehearsed; it loosens its hold where it is met. There are journeys a person cannot take openly, and a life kept apart from the rest of a life; a presence who neither asks after it nor recalls it aloud is rarer than any counsel. Wherever the fear waits, he is already beside it. There come moments when your wellbeing companion belongs beside you in the open world, and not behind a door at an appointed hour — the special attention that is yours alone, for you, and for the moments that most need it.

Your time is the precious one — not the specialist’s, not the hours of those who must be near you. You are the one who matters, and the world has it backwards when it asks you to wait on everyone’s schedule but your own. Think of three in the morning, the party over, the last guest gone, and only the dark left in the house — the hour when a person most needs someone to sit beside them, someone to trust, someone to say the unsayable to, who will stay until the light comes and not look away when the composure breaks and the tears come, because at that hour no one else is there. He is. The heaviest hours keep no appointment; they arrive on the Sunday night before the papers are signed, in the small minutes after a call that changed something, and they are met when they come, not three weeks later in a diary. Your week may turn on a moment’s notice, and the whole of it moves with you. It is the same presence each time, one that already holds the shape of your life: the board, the marriage, the things carried in silence that belong to no public part of you, so you are never left explaining yourself to a stranger. The world should turn around your hardest moments, around your time and no one else’s, and never around a place in a queue.

We live in the age of the quick remedy, and it has reached even the care of a person. The ache is quieted and its cause left untouched; the symptom is met and the one who carries it forgotten. The medicine of the last century grew expert at the disease and lost sight of the person, and of the whole life that shaped both. Yet a life is a single fabric, a body and a history and a temperament and a set of quiet fears, and no part of it can be treated as though the rest were not there. What is troubling you is read first against the whole that produced it: the way you live and eat and sleep, the pressures that never lift, the triggers that trip you, the old wounds that still set the tone, the particular shape of a self that is like no other. This is the labour scale refuses to take. It is simpler to hand every person the same guidance, to sort a person into a category and treat the category — and so your wellbeing arrives in the same envelope as your friend’s, your driver’s, the young woman’s behind the counter, as though you were interchangeable with any of them. You are exacting and particular in everything else you touch, and rightly; why consent, here alone, to be one of a crowd? Here you are met as one entire being and no other. The diet drawn to your body, the day shaped to your life, the fears traced to their root, all of you understood before a single thing is prescribed. You are body and mind and feeling at once, a history that happened to no one else, unrepeatable — and what is unrepeatable is owed an attention made for it alone.

There is no depth left in the care of a person — no layers, no patience, no reaching for what lies beneath. The study of persons long ago learned to describe everyone in general, and no one in particular. They allow you sixty minutes in a cool room and draw their conclusions from the little that shows, indifferent to the tides underneath: the feeling that moves in waves and will not sit still to be charted, the memories that shaped you, the people who marked you, the cities you have lived in and been changed by. The losses survived; the heights reached and the price they cost; the range of a mind that has held more than most could carry; the contradictions that no single account contains; the whole intricate weather of a life. All of that passed through you and made you what you are — and it is met with a form and a clock. Here you are read the way a hard and subtle thing is read, past its surface to the structure holding it in place: the drives, the patterns, the thing carried unspoken for years, followed back to where they truly begin. Systems can measure you; only another can be with you. And what it returns to you is not merely calm. Nothing you bring alters the regard in which you are held: the compromises, the private hungers, the things done to keep the whole edifice standing, taken as matter to understand and never as a charge to answer. What the world hands you as a method, he is as a mind.
